The physicians who power CHG were also the ones most underserved by its technology.
CHG Healthcare places locum tenens physicians (doctors who work on a temporary or contract basis) in facilities across the country. Those physicians aren’t just filling shifts. They’re leaving their routines, their communities, sometimes their families, to work somewhere new. A strange house. A rental car. A workplace where they don’t know anyone. The administrative complexity of credentialing, licensing, travel, housing, and pay landed on top of all of it. The portal had one job: get out of the way so the relationship could do its work.
As Creative Director, I led the team designing the CHG Provider Portal.
More than the medicine
Physicians don’t choose locum tenens reluctantly. They choose it because they love it. The flexibility, the variety, the freedom to practice medicine on their own terms. What they didn’t sign up for was the administrative weight that came with it. Credentialing, licensing, travel, housing, time entry, pay — all of it managed across scattered systems and email threads, landing on top of an already demanding clinical life.
The portal wasn’t there to manage transactions. It was there to protect the experience that made physicians choose this life. That meant serving three very different people: the physician considering their first assignment, the one already on the ground needing support, and the one who had walked away and needed a reason to come back.
Designed to own
The work didn’t end with a strategy deck. Over roughly six months, I led the team through the full foundational build, working alongside CHG’s product and engineering teams until they could own it and continue developing it themselves.
The platform that came out of it was built around one idea: reduce the friction in every part of the physician experience so the relationship between recruiter and provider could do what it does best.
